Questions and answers

Everything brokers and forwarders ask us before they start, grouped so you can find your question quickly.

What it does

Does Tariffly lodge entries with customs?

No. Tariffly prepares and checks the draft. Your licensed broker reviews it and lodges it through your existing customs system (CargoWise, Expedient or any other). Tariffly never talks to the Integrated Cargo System.

Which documents can it read?

Commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, air waybills, certificates of origin and purchase orders, as PDFs or clear photos (JPG, PNG, WebP). Up to six files of 10 MB each per shipment. Multi-page PDFs are fine; scanned documents work when they are legible.

Which languages?

The AI model reads invoices in most major languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Bahasa, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, German and French. The draft is always written in English. Numbers with comma decimals are handled.

What does the Australian layer add?

For imports into Australia, every line gets the 8-digit tariff item and statistical code from the current Working Tariff, the general duty rate, the agreements that may give a preferential rate for the stated origin, and a link to the Tariff Concession Orders for that item. Read more.

Does it work for other countries?

Yes at the international 6-digit HS level, which every customs authority uses. The national tariff item, duty and permits for other countries are added by your team. New Zealand and the United Kingdom are next on our list; tell us if you need them sooner.

What is product memory?

Every code your team confirms or approves is remembered per workspace, keyed by product description and SKU. The next time the product appears, the code is reused and the line is marked “seen before”; if the new draft differs, you get a warning before you lodge. You can search and clear the memory at any time.

How does email intake work?

Your workspace gets its own address, like docs+k7f3m2p9qa@merakivale.com. Forward the shipper’s email there, or send the documents as attachments. Within a few minutes a shipment is created, the draft starts, and the sender gets a link. The subject line becomes the shipment reference.

Accuracy and responsibility

How accurate are the HS codes?

It depends on how well the goods are described. Clear descriptions with material, construction and use usually get a high-confidence code. Thin descriptions are marked medium or low and come with the question to ask the shipper. Every code is a suggestion until your broker confirms it. The pilot is designed so you can measure accuracy on your own last 20 entries before you pay anything.

Who is responsible if a code is wrong?

Your licensed broker and the owner of the goods, exactly as today. Tariffly is drafting assistance and the terms say so plainly. What changes is that you now hold a documented, timestamped rationale for every line, the thing an audit asks for and most desks do not have.

Is the output a binding ruling?

No. Only an ABF Tariff Advice is binding. For contested lines, Tariffly gives you the reasoning and alternatives to put in a Tariff Advice application.

Can Tariffly make up a tariff item?

Not for Australia. The 8-digit item and stat code are chosen only from the real items in the published Working Tariff; the model cannot invent one. At the 6-digit level, the model proposes codes and Tariffly checks the format; your broker confirms.

How current is the tariff data?

The Australian data is refreshed from the ABF’s current tariff pages, and every line records the version it was drafted against. Check the ABF notices for amendments that post-date it; we show the date in the app.

Security and privacy

Where are our documents stored, and who can see them?

On servers operated by Hostinger, outside the public web root, encrypted in transit and at rest. Only people in your workspace can see your shipments. Our founders have administrative access for support, which is logged. Security page.

Is our data used to train AI models?

No. Documents are sent to Anthropic’s Claude API only to produce your draft, under commercial terms that exclude training, and Anthropic deletes API data within 30 days. We never train on your content either.

Does it meet the Privacy Act?

Our privacy policy is written to the Australian Privacy Principles, names every overseas recipient (APP 8), explains the automated-processing position, and commits to breach notification within 72 hours. We publish a sub-processor list with 30 days’ notice of changes.

Can we delete everything?

Yes. Delete any shipment (documents removed immediately) or the whole workspace from Settings. After a subscription ends, data stays exportable for 30 days, then is deleted from live systems within 60 days and from backups within 90. Remember that section 240 of the Customs Act requires you to keep the records for five years, so export first.

Plans and billing

What does the pilot include?

14 days, 100 shipments, up to 3 people, every feature, no card. When it ends, new shipments pause and your data stays available to export for 30 days. Nothing is charged automatically.
