How Tariffly works

From an email with two attachments to an approved, exportable entry draft, and what happens at each step.

  1. 1. Documents arrive

Upload them in the app, or forward the shipper’s email to your workspace’s intake address. PDF or phone photos; commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, air waybill, certificate of origin, purchase order. Up to six files per shipment.

  2. 2. Tariffly reads everything

The AI model reads each page and extracts the shipper, consignee, incoterm, currency, totals, weights, packages, ports and every invoice line. Nothing is typed by hand.

  3. 3. Every line is classified, with reasons

Each line gets a 6-digit HS 2022 code, the General Rule of Interpretation it used, the alternatives it ruled out, a confidence level, and, when the description is thin, the exact question to ask the shipper.

  4. 4. The Australian layer is added

For imports into Australia, Tariffly selects the 8-digit tariff item and statistical code from the current Working Tariff, shows the general duty rate and the agreements that may give preference, and links to the Tariff Concession Orders for that item. Details.

  5. 5. Documents are compared

Quantities, weights, package counts, values, currency, parties, origin and reference numbers are checked across every document, line totals are added up, and the ABF’s most common error types (invoice terms, valuation date, delivery address) get their own checks. Issues are listed as “Must fix”, “Check” or “Note”.

  6. 6. Your history is applied

Product memory looks for products your team has approved before. A match confirms the code; a difference is flagged so you decide which is right and your records stay consistent.

  7. 7. A broker reviews

The draft lands in the review queue. Reviewers confirm or change each code, pick a different Australian item from a dropdown of real options, add notes, request changes from the operator, or approve. Nothing is final until a reviewer approves it.

  8. 8. Export and lodge

Approved drafts export as CSV or JSON for your customs system, or print for the file. The documents, draft, every edit, every approval and the tariff version stay together for the five-year record period.

Roles that match a brokerage

  • Operators create shipments, upload documents, start drafts, edit lines and add notes.
  • Reviewers (your licensed brokers) do everything operators do, plus approve, request changes, reopen and delete.
  • Owners manage the team, billing and settings.

Invite as many people as your plan allows; reviewers are usually the scarce licensed nominees, operators the people who handle the paperwork.

What Tariffly will not do

  • It will not lodge a declaration or talk to the ICS.
  • It will not invent a value, a code or a date that is not in the documents; missing items are listed as missing.
  • It will not approve anything. People do that.
  • It will not use your documents to train AI models, and neither will our AI provider.
